The importance of salt is universal, from ancient times on through today in remote areas around the globe. As any heart patient will tell you, or anyone who cannot use salt as part of their diet, how much they miss this zesty seasoning.
Salt is found along the seashore or mined. In olden times, to clear the chaff of seaweed or unwanted dirt and grime was to take a linen sack, open the top and pour water over the salt inside. Thus the actual salt was strained out of the linen. All that remained was the chaff. Later the linen was shaken and dried. New mounds of salt were enclosed and more water poured over. Eventually, remnants of the salt lose their flavor and are thrown out with the chaff. Fresh linen and salt are procured.
Salt is a flavor enhancer for all it touches - like the surrounding condiments, herbs and spices, all enhanced and augmented. Jesus said we are the salt of the earth. Like the salt which refreshes our food, we are the salt of the earth for others. We bring forth what is good in those whose lives we touch, revealing the goodness in our neighbors and friends. The key is to keep our saltiness; to not go flat and be thrown out with the chaff.
As we know, salt in wounds stings like crazy for a long time. Too much salt in our communication brings equally painful results. One unkind tirade can upset our relationships for an hour, a year, or longer.
Even Shakespeare in his play, King Lear, has a scene where King Lear asks his three daughters how much they love him. The third daughter answers her father, “I love you as much as meat loves salt.” Enraged he banishes his daughter for the seeming simple reply. At the end of his life, at the end of the play, he is served meat without salt and dies understanding how much his daughter loved him after all.
So here's to old salts like you and me. We earn our salt today as we bring forth the good flavors, the sweetness, of those around us. And when life gets tough – like the salt, just shake it off.
